Direct bookings vs Booking.com: how a hotel website wins back commission
Online travel agencies bring guests, but every booking through them costs a commission. A good hotel website does not replace OTAs — it makes sure that guests who already know your hotel book directly.
Why direct bookings matter
- Commission. OTA commission typically starts at around 15% of the booking value and grows with visibility programmes. A direct booking keeps that money in the hotel.
- The guest relationship. With a direct booking you have the guest's contact details and can offer upgrades, add-ons and a reason to come back.
- Control. Your own rates, packages, cancellation rules and presentation, not a template shared with every competitor.
OTAs are not the enemy
Many guests discover a hotel on Booking.com or another OTA, then look it up by name. That search is the moment the hotel website either wins the booking or sends the guest back to the OTA. The goal is not to leave OTAs, but to make the direct route clearly better for guests who have already chosen you.
What makes guests book directly
1. A reason to book direct
A direct-booking discount, breakfast included, free late checkout, parking or a room upgrade. Say it on the first screen and next to every booking button. Check your OTA contracts for rate parity terms: added value is often easier to offer than a lower price.
2. Booking where the guest is reading
A booking form on every room page, with dates and the room already selected, instead of a single “Book now” button that starts from scratch. For Hotel Ukraine we adapted the booking forms on room pages to the booking engine, so guests choose dates and a room right where they read about it.
3. A short, trustworthy booking flow
Dates, room, guest details, payment — and an instant confirmation. The booking engine should look like part of your website, not a different site.
4. Everything the guest checks before booking
Real photos of each room type, size and beds, what is included, cancellation terms, location and parking, and reviews. If the guest has to go back to the OTA to find something, they will book there.
5. Speed on a phone
Most hotel searches start on a phone. A slow or awkward mobile site loses the guest to an OTA app that loads instantly.
6. Your own brand search
Make sure your website ranks first for your hotel name, with a clear title and description. Many booking engines can also show your direct rates in Google Hotels next to the OTAs.
How to measure progress
- The share of direct bookings in total bookings, month by month.
- Website conversion rate: bookings divided by visits.
- Where the booking flow loses guests — from the booking engine reports and analytics.
- Commission saved compared with the same bookings through OTAs.
