Hotel Websites

Hotel website development checklist: what to get right before launch

A hotel website has one main job: turn visitors into direct bookings. This checklist covers what to plan, build and test so the site does that job from day one.

Before you start

  • Set a measurable goal. For example, the share of direct bookings versus OTAs, or the number of bookings per month from the website.
  • Know your guests. Business or leisure, domestic or international, booking on a phone or a laptop. This decides languages, currencies and what goes on the first screen.
  • List your systems. PMS, channel manager, booking engine, payment provider, email marketing. The website has to work with all of them.
  • Collect content early. Room descriptions, professional photos, policies and prices are the most common reason hotel projects are delayed.

Booking

  • Live availability and prices, pulled from your PMS or channel manager — never entered by hand on the website.
  • A short booking flow: dates, room, guest details, payment. Every extra step loses guests.
  • Booking without leaving your website, or at least without the guest noticing a change of design.
  • Rate plans: flexible and non-refundable rates, breakfast included, long stays.
  • Packages, special offers and promo codes for direct bookers.
  • Add-ons such as transfers, parking or spa treatments — extra revenue at the moment of booking.
  • Secure online payment and instant confirmation email.
  • The whole flow tested on a phone, since that is where most guests start.

Room and hotel pages

  • A separate page for each room type with photos, size, beds, view and amenities.
  • A clear “Book” button on every room page, with the dates carried into the booking form.
  • Location: map, how to get there from the airport and station, what is nearby.
  • Policies: check-in and check-out times, cancellation, children, pets, parking.
  • Restaurant, meeting rooms and events, if you have them — each can be its own source of enquiries.
  • Reviews and ratings, so guests do not leave to check them on an OTA.

Speed and mobile

  • Images compressed and served in modern formats; large galleries loaded as the guest scrolls.
  • Good Core Web Vitals on mobile: fast first screen, no layout jumps.
  • Tap-friendly buttons and date pickers that work well on small screens.

SEO

  • Unique title and description for every page, written for what guests search: hotel type, city, area, features.
  • Structured data for the hotel (schema.org Hotel), including address, rating and amenities.
  • A Google Business Profile that matches the website: name, address, phone.
  • Correct language versions with hreflang if the site is multilingual.
  • Pages for what makes you different — events, spa, location — that can rank on their own.

Analytics

  • GA4 with conversion tracking for completed bookings and their value.
  • Tracking that follows the guest into the booking engine, so bookings are not lost as “referrals” from your own site.
  • Enquiry forms, calls and email clicks tracked as conversions too.

Legal pages and consent

  • Privacy policy that covers booking data and every provider that processes it.
  • Cookie consent that actually blocks analytics and advertising cookies until the guest agrees.
  • Booking terms and cancellation policy linked from the booking flow.

Launch

  • Test bookings with real payments on every rate plan, then refund them.
  • 301 redirects from every old URL if you are replacing an existing website — see our technical SEO migration checklist.
  • Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Monitoring of bookings, errors and search traffic for the first weeks.
